There are plenty of innovative grills out on the market, but few are as unique as the Big Green Egg. The ceramic kamado-style charcoal grill offers plenty of unique features that make it a joy to grill, bake and smoke your favorite foods. But the most impressive part is how easy it is to clean. Here are some pointers you use to keep your grill in great shape.
Scrape and Scrub Away
Forget about washing the inside of your Big Green Egg – the porous ceramic interior is designed to absorb water. You shouldn’t use any solvents or chemicals either, since those could damage the porous ceramic and potentially ruin your grill.
Instead, you’ll want to scrape and scrub as much of the oil, ash and gunk buildup as possible. It’s handy to have a scraper on hand for this job, although you can ball up some heavy-duty aluminum foil and use that to scrub away the gunk, if needed.
As for the cooking grid, you can use a stainless-steel wire brush to get rid of any stuck-on residue. The standard stainless-steel grill can also go in the dishwasher for added convenience. If you have the optional cast iron grill, a quick scrubbing after each use can help maintain its good looks and keep food particles at bay.
Let It Burn
Next, you’ll take advantage of the Big Green Egg’s self-cleaning capability to remove the remaining gunk from the grill. Add a full load of natural lump charcoal and light the grill according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t use lighter fluid, as that’ll leave behind a terrible odor and taint your food’s flavor upon subsequent cooks.
Let the grill get up to around 600 degrees Fahrenheit and keep it there for at least an hour. This will give your grill enough time to thoroughly burn away any leftover food or oils inside. Open up the bottom vent and let the grill cool down before you begin dumping out the ash.
Empty It Out
At this point, the bottom of the grill should be filled with ashes, leaving the rest of the grill relatively clean. Use the ash tool to sift through the charcoal and knock as much ash into the bottom of the grill. Make sure to clear the vent holes of any ash before moving on.
Next, rake out the ash from the bottom of the grill using the ash tool. Use a disposable steel or aluminum pan to collect the ash raked through the bottom vent. Use a shop vacuum to remove the remainder of the ash and debris from the grill.
